We are not holding a typical rally at the Statehouse – that has been done before and this is a different type of event. \nPublic schools are under attack. Hands Off. Universities are under attack. Hands Off. RIPTA\, medicaid\, hospitals\, infrastructure – all under attack. HANDS OFF. \nThis is a mobilization\, i.e. moving from one place to another in solidarity. We will be moving from Hope HS and ending at Burnside Park/Kennedy Plaza/RIPTA. The walk is about 1.2 miles on relatively flat ground. The US healthcare system is under attack as the Trump administration slashes spending for Medicaid\, Medicare and Social Security\, beginning with deep staff cuts. Despite anticipated federal cuts\, Governor McKee’s current state budget proposes $25 million in hospital cuts\, failing to adequately fund community health clinics\, and reducing nursing home staffing to unsafe levels. Rhode Island’s health care system was already in crisis\, due to low reimbursement rates\, a shortage of pediatricians and primary care doctors\, and the closure of Anchor Medical Associates\, which will leave low-income Rhode Islanders without access to doctors. Rhode Islanders are urged to protest cutbacks in healthcare in our state and in the nation. Tell Governor McKee we need a transformative healthcare budget that protects and invests in Medicaid and raises revenue through taxes on the wealthiest. DESCRIPTION:We Need to Support our Library and ALL of our Kids.\nWhere: Jamestown Philomenian Library\nWhen: Saturday\, August 16th from Noon – 2 p.m.\nAugust 16 is not only the Jamestown Philomenian Library’s book fair\, but it will be an occasion to show up in support for our library\, all of our children and our right to read what we choose. \nWhy all the hoopla? Because an organization called Moms for Liberty has chosen this day to put on an event in one of the library’s meeting rooms. We know these folks have every right to utilize our library just as we all do. But this is part of a national campaign by an organization and a book publisher\, whose values and methods are less than friendly. Learn more. \nThey are the folks behind book bans in an effort to eliminate books that reference race and LGBTQ identity in libraries and schools across the country. They have harassed librarians\, teachers and other folks involved in educating kids. And their founders have a pretty tawdry personal history. Florida school board recommends ouster of Moms for Liberty co-founder over Republican sex scandal | PBS News \nJoin us in forming a circle around our library as a show of support for our library\, our librarians\, our teachers and our kids\, all of them.
