DESCRIPTION:We Need to Support our Library and ALL of our Kids.\nWhere: Jamestown Philomenian Library\nWhen: Saturday\, August 16th from Noon – 2 p.m.\nAugust 16 is not only the Jamestown Philomenian Library’s book fair\, but it will be an occasion to show up in support for our library\, all of our children and our right to read what we choose. \nWhy all the hoopla? Because an organization called Moms for Liberty has chosen this day to put on an event in one of the library’s meeting rooms. We know these folks have every right to utilize our library just as we all do. But this is part of a national campaign by an organization and a book publisher\, whose values and methods are less than friendly. Learn more. \nThey are the folks behind book bans in an effort to eliminate books that reference race and LGBTQ identity in libraries and schools across the country. They have harassed librarians\, teachers and other folks involved in educating kids. And their founders have a pretty tawdry personal history. Florida school board recommends ouster of Moms for Liberty co-founder over Republican sex scandal | PBS News \nJoin us in forming a circle around our library as a show of support for our library\, our librarians\, our teachers and our kids\, all of them. DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Jamestown Philomenian Library Present:\n“The Devil Never Sleeps: Climate risk and resiliency in an age of disasters” Discussion with Professor Juliette Kayyem \nAs we are all well aware\, disasters are neither random nor rare. In this timely and thought-provoking discussion\, Professor Juliette Kayyem\, one of the world’s foremost authorities on crisis management and resilience\, will explore how we can better align crisis preparedness in a world where climate disasters are standard and expected. She will also discuss the changes to disaster preparedness in the Trump Administration and the pressures on local and state capabilities. Drawing on themes from her most recent book\, The Devil Never Sleeps: Learning to Live in an Age of Disasters\, Professor Kayyem will examine the commonalities that link all disasters to provide lessons on how we can “learn to fail safer.” Success\, she argues\, must be measured not by eliminating all risks\, an impossible task\, but by ensuring that our investments in preparedness make things “less bad” than they would otherwise be. Professor Kayyem brings unparalleled expertise to this conversation. She is the faculty chair of the Homeland Security and Global Health Projects at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government\, where she teaches the premier course on mitigating and managing crises. She has served as President Barack Obama’s Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security\, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick’s Homeland Security Advisor\, and is currently CNN’s Senior National Security Analyst.
